IOM's Displacement Tracking Matrix has been monitoring displacement movements since 15 October 2017, when Iraqi Security Forces began moving into disputed areas that had previously been held by Kurdish forces. These areas included parts of Ninewa, Diyala, Salah al-Din and Erbil Governorates.

As of  October 16, 2018, a total of 94,098 people remain displaced following the handover of the disputed areas. The current total for returnees from this crisis is 232,764. Returnee figures should be interpreted with caution as the situation was particularly fluid in the early weeks of the crisis, with many displacement movements lasting a matter of days.

The Disputed Areas -  Emergency Tracking will be updated on each Monday.

The Emergency Tracking system is a crisis-based tool that aims at tracking sudden displacement or return movements triggered by emerging crises. New releases will be issued as per unfolding humanitarian needs, therefore it should be inferred that population movements are still being monitored, however ET updates will be released only if new remarkable movements are observed. While the IOM DTM strives to provide best estimates, we do acknowledge its limitations. IOM DTM will continue to work to further verify the displacement data within the two-week DTM reporting cycle.
